Chapter 18

My head pounded. An internal banging on the inside of my skull. My hands went to my temples, my fingers rubbing my scalp, but none of that helped. I need Tylenol and a CT scan. Odds were, I had a concussion and I should be mentally evaluated. What was I doing? Why couldn’t I have just gone into the portal of heaven? Why was I so obsessed with this baby?

“Because she’s a part of you.”

My body jolted with the familiar female voice. I sat straight up as my eyes snapped open and the air left my body. I wasn’t in Alex Bay. I wasn’t at Orion’s mansion in South Carolina. I was nowhere. Everywhere. The middle of a green, lush forest. A prairie to the north. The ocean far off to the east. The mountains to the west. The desert to the south.

The grimoire the book was next to me, and next to the book was the grimoire the woman. In a long, blue summer dress made of sheer fabric, she looked as if she were relaxing at a picnic with her knees folded to the side. I was anything but relaxed and shook from the adrenaline coursing through my body. “My mother’s boyfriend—”

“Was never there,” the grimoire cut me off. “That was a phobos. A demon who paralyzes you by using your fear.”

A million questions sprang to my mind, but there was only one who mattered, “Is the baby okay?”

“Thanks to your warning to her, yes, she is safe.”

Through the massive migraine of a headache, I perked up. “The Fae found her?”

“No and neither did the demons. She convinced her mother to flee and they escaped.”

I rubbed my head again. I was experiencing delusions. It was the only sane explanation. “How can a baby in the womb make her mother do anything?” Even though I was the one who sent the warning.

The grimoire gave an impish grin. “The baby is strong, tenacious, convincing, and not like other babies.”

She could say that again. “If the baby can do all that, can I give her directions as to where we can meet up? She can choose. A Target? Panera? Maybe a local park?”

The grimoire gave a small laugh. “That’s not how it works.”

No, not much worked in my favor. “So, we failed.”

“Tonight was not a failure. The mother is still unknown to the dangerous demons.”

“And the Fae,” I added.

“The baby is currently safe, which means you are fulfilling your role in the Great Plan. Now, let your Fae take you home, get some rest, and continue on your path.”

My eyebrows pulled together with confusion, which didn’t help the headache. “What?”

Movement of my hair, a hand gently pushing back the strands. A blink and the forest disappeared. Another blink and Orion was holding me in his arms. We were next to water, the cool evening air biting at my skin, and beyond Orion was the castle. “Cassie, are you okay?”

“Yes.” No. My mouth was dry, the pain in my head worse than in the forest, which I didn’t know was possible.
